Cinema Hits & Misses is an institution, the show has been on for a few decades.

Thursday nights for half an hour, a few cinephiles discuss recent film releases. In our era, we rotated every other week so it was easier to see two films (e.g., we had two shows a month).

Late 2010 through early 2012, those Thursday night shows, Zarra and I were Statler and Waldorf, Siskel and Ebert. (I’d like to think I was Ebert.) We were the male/female voices in that rotation; the other pair were two female hosts, Dawn and Gail. Around town when I’d tell people I was on the show, listeners would comment, “Ohhhh, you’re the woman who takes on the guy…yeah, that’s good stuff!” or some such. Zarra is opinionated! As he used to say, “Conflict makes good radio.” Indeed it did!

I think we had a great show. It was LIVE, no script. I would prepare each week and we’d never know until we got in the booth what was gonna happen. Zarra refused to discuss anything beforehand, so that it would be spontaneous and electric. We would take calls from listeners, too, which was great fun. I mean, who calls into a radio show anymore? How amazing!

I made many friends through WMPG: Dawn, Jessica, Lisa Bunker, Gail, Justine, Bob, Kazeem! The lovely folks at The Nickelodeon who would comp us tix. Dozens of friendly faces and voices.

For 2.5 years, and 61 fantastic shows, my last regular co-hosting gig was March 1, 2012. I’ve popped in a few times over the last decade. I still have mad love for WMPG and listen every day. I’m so grateful for that gig, the 120+ films I saw, and very proud of the quality of discussions we had. Long live WMPG!
