I am Ruby Simkoff, currently the host of Ruby’s Juke Joint on Sundays at 3:30pm. I play an eclectic range of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I started seriously listening to WMPG in the 1980’s, when it really was Maine’s radio oasis. I recall hearing great sounds of Reggae, Blues, Jazz, Punk Rock as well as rock sounds not heard on commercial radio. I was friends with a lot of the radio DJ’s. Ed Noyes, and Dennis McLaughlin were important music compatriots. We saw a lot of really good music together from the 1970’s onward (The Rolling Thunder Review, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Sly and the Family Stone, Bonnie Rait, Tina Turner,etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1990 Ed invited me to sit in on his show and showed me the analog system of the board and how to cue up a vinyl record.I remember Peter Twitchell making sure I applied for my FCC Broadcaster License. It wasn’t long before Myron Samuels( may his memory be a blessing) asked me to sub for him on July 4 1990.Pretty soon after a slot opened up on Saturday as part of the Evening Sun line up. I was thrilled to be a part of this gang for 32 years until its recent demise. A conservative estimate of those hours is 3200 on air blues hours, not counting any subbing, special fundraising or special programming.Over the 32 years I am very proud to say the listeners responded by donating thousands of $$$$ during the times I begged for money. WMPG also allowed me the privilege of serving as the Blues Director, Office Manager, Board Member(2x) Women’s History Month Programming Coordinator, Mardi Gras Festival coordinator, 25th Anniversary Co- Coordinator(with JoAnne Lafferty) 30th anniversary Contributor, Congress Square DJ and of course Tabeling Ambassador! Music has always been an important part of my life and I am very grateful that WMPG has given me the opportunity to share that passion with listeners, I have met some of the greatest people who also share this passion.
